Course Prescription

Introduces fundamental concepts in geomorphology for geologists and physical geographers. Key aspects of geomorphology, sedimentology, and earth surface processes are introduced by studying the temporal and spatial development of coastal and river landforms. Applied techniques for earth and environmental sciences, including field, remote sensing, GIS mapping, and modelling.

Course Overview

New Zealand is recognised internationally for its spectacular landscape. To understand how landscapes have developed we need Geomorphology - the science concerned with the landforms and processes on the Earth?s surface. This course provides an introduction to basic concepts in geomorphology. Rivers and coasts are used as case-study environments to introduce key areas of geomorphology, sedimentology, and earth surface processes that are necessary to understand the temporal and spatial development of landforms and landscapes. The course introduces cutting-edge techniques used across the earth and environmental sciences, including remote sensing, GIS mapping, and modelling. Together this approach provides fundamental knowledge for applied physical geography and earth science studies.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify and discuss key concepts of geomorphology (Capability 1)
  2. Recognise and assess the importance of different controls on coastal landform development at a range of timescales (Capability 1 and 2)
  3. Discuss the interrelationships between land forms, land cover and river processes (Capability 1 and 2)
  4. Demonstrate practical geospatial skills for understanding landscape change (Capability 3)
  5. Demonstrate practical audio-visual skills for communicating geomorphic knowledge (Capability 4)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in. 

For this course, you can expect 25 hours of lectures/tutorials, 35 hours of laboratory work, field work and video essay work, 40 hours of reading and thinking about the content, and 50 hours of work on assignments and/or exam preparation.
