ECON 301 : Advanced Microeconomics

Course Prescription

Advanced treatment of aspects of consumer theory, producer theory, and game theory. Applications of this basic theory to the analysis of some topics in uncertainty, contracts, auctions, oligopoly, and information economics.

Course Overview

ECON 301 is a prerequisite for postgraduate study in economics and as such an integral part of the Economics Honours pathway. It is designed to prepare for ECON 701, and also to serve as a culminating experience in microeconomics within the Economics major for undergraduate economics students who might not choose to progress to further postgraduate study. The objective is to deepen understanding of undergraduate microeconomic theory, introduce some basic technical tools and methods of analysis, and illustrate a range of applications.  Each week there are assigned recordings for students to watch and a set of exercises that should be attempted prior to class meetings where students can ask for further explanation and will be expected to contribute to discussion of the recorded material and the exercises.  All students are expected to attend these classes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Evaluate the methodology of modern microeconomics. (Capability 1 and 4.2)
  2. Examine the historical evolution of the ideas. (Capability 1)
  3. Develop and improve problem-solving skills. (Capability 3)
  4. Analyse some of the journal literature in economics, and practice writing about economic concepts. (Capability 1 and 4.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect about 2 hours of recorded material, 3 hours of class romm meetings, a 1 hour tutorial,  and 4 hours of work on exercises, assignments and/or test preparation.

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including tutorials to complete components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including  tutorials  will  not be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events.
Attendance on campus is required for the test and exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Lecture slides and printable versions of the slides are provides on CANVAS.  Exercises for each week are also provided on CANVAS and detailed answers to many of the exercises will be provided, but typically not until after students have attempted them themselves.  There is no prescribed text but for students who would like a text to accompany the course, the following are recommended:

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Students in 2022 did not respond to the SET evaluations in sufficient numbers to allow me to see the comments so no changes will be made in response to the comments.  Given the rather poor attendance in class this semester that is not too surprising.  I shall not make the change for the coming year, but for following years I shall consider making in class assessments that will require regular attendance.  The recordings were made available due to the positive response to students to the recordings that were initially made during the covid lockdowns.

Academic Integrity
