Course Prescription

Through inquiry, develop capability and understanding of the role of science and technology in education and society. Apply integration principles with pedagogical, content, assessment and curriculum knowledge to science and technology learning experiences resulting in valued outcomes for diverse akonga.

Course Overview

This course builds on learning in EDCURRIC 113. After revising science and technology education pedagogy, students will be introduced to approaches to integration, constructivist learning theory and ways of incorporating Mātauranga Māori and aspects of sustainability into science and technology learning programmes. A case study where science and technology have been integrated will be explored. Students will then experience socioscientific/technological issues using integrated science and technology education learning activities. There will be an opportunity in a group to collaboratively plan a series of integrated science and technology lessons and then individually analyse the planned lessons.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Recognise and apply appropriate characteristics of the nature of science and technology to science/technology learning experiences. (Capability 3.1, 3.2 and 4.2)
  2. Identify and apply integration principles to the design of science/technology learning experiences that are culturally responsive, engaging and aligned to valued outcomes. (Capability 1.2, 3.2 and 4.2)
  3. Select and justify a sequence of learning activities over a series of lessons. (Capability 1.2, 2.2, 6.1 and 7.2)
  4. Apply and use digital technologies in collaborative networks to inquire into practice using evidence from literature and coursework to build professional capability. (Capability 3.1 and 3.2)

To pass this course students must attend the workshops where the five in-class tasks will be completed, submit all assessment tasks, achieve at least 15% for each individual assessment task and achieve at least 50% for the overall course.

Teaching & Learning Methods

The teaching and learning methods used in this course include lectures that will incorporate small group and whole cohort discussions. Practical hands-on activities in small groups will also be part of the lectures and workshops so that students can experience science and technology learning activities that they can then use in their classroom programmes.

Exam Mode

There is no final examination.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect a 2 hour lecture and a 2 hour workshop session each week. The first half of the course has a focus on the underpinning themes of integration/STEM, learning theory, and the inclusion of elements of Mātauranga Māori and aspects of sustainability.

You can also expect to commit to approximately 120 hours to independent learning over the duration of the course. This learning could include reading, note-taking, face-to-face and/or online discussions, writing, engaging in collaborative group work, problem solving, undertaking practical tasks, reflecting on learning and teaching, accessing learning and study resources, and completing assignments.

Some information and/or content may be provided in video recordings to be viewed prior to lectures or workshops to enable more time for discussion and engagement with key ideas during the lecture and/or workshop time.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at the scheduled activities including workshops to complete and receive credit for the components of this course.

Attendance on campus is required for the five in-class assessment tasks. These tasks must be completed in person on campus.

The course will not include live online events including group discussions/tutorials.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

City Campus Experience

Attendance is required at both the lecture and workshop each week. The lectures will be available as recordings.

Tai Tonga Campus Experience

The course is delivered using a blended approach. This includes weekly online asynchronous lectures, and scheduled weekly in person workshops.

Te Tai Tokerau Campus Experience

The course is delivered using a blended approach. This includes weekly online asynchronous lectures, and three scheduled whole day workshops.

For all students, it is essential that engagement with the lecture occurs prior to attendance at the scheduled workshops.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Health & Safety

The health and safety requirements related to working in the Multi Purpose Learning Space will be outlined at the first session. Prior to engaging in practical hands-on activities, any relevant health and safety issues will be discussed.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

In the 2024 review, students found the assignment expectations were clearly communicated and the videos about each assessment task especially helpful. They also liked the range of different teaching modes used during the course. A few students thought that the time frame for completing the group assignment was very tight. In the 2025 delivery of this course, we will consider the timing of the due date for this assessment task.

Academic Integrity

The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced.
