Course Prescription

Students engage in advanced study of theory and research related to optimising Reading Recovery's effectiveness. A critical understanding of Literacy Processing theory and Reading Recovery principles and practices is integral to support teachers in effectively working with children having difficulty with literacy learning. A practicum component involving daily teaching of four six-year-old children forming case studies for analysis is required.

Course Overview

This course is one of the four required for the professional training year for Reading Recovery Tutors. It comprises part of the full qualification for the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Reading Recovery Specialisation). The course will be completed during the full-time study year.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Administer, critique and evaluate a range of literacy assessments for young children with particular attention to oral language development, beginning reading and early writing (Capability 1.2 and 6.2)
  2. Demonstrate the skills and ability to identify, assess, plan and deliver high-quality individual instruction for children requiring further assistance due to lack of progress with literacy learning after one year at school (Capability 3.2, 5.1 and 6.2)
  3. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of theory and practice related to the Reading Recovery teaching procedures (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 3.2, 6.1 and 6.2)
  4. Critically evaluate research on Reading Recovery teaching and learning (Capability 2.1, 2.3, 4.1, 6.1 and 6.2)

Workload Expectations

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 30 point course, comprised of two 15 point courses (A and B) across the full year. On average, students are expected to spend 10 hours per week in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

A typical semester including the study/exam period totals approximately 15 weeks. This means that for this course you should expect to commit 24 hours to direct contact via on-campus lectures/workshops/tutorials].

You can also reasonably expect to commit approximately 100-120 hours to independent learning each semester. This may include reading (and more reading), note-taking, face-to-face and/or online discussion, writing, engaging in collaborative group work, problem solving, undertaking practical tasks, reflecting on learning, accessing learning and study resources, and assignment, test and exam preparation and completion.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
