Course Prescription

Develops understanding of the disciplines of hangarau and pūtaiao. Demonstrates knowledge of the hangarau and pūtaiao learning areas, other relevant progressions and support guidelines and materials. Demonstrates knowledge of the relevance of hangarau and pūtaiao for students, community and society.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop an understanding of the disciplines of hangarau and putaiao and their relevance to learners. (Capability 1.1, 2.2, 4.1 and 4.2)
  2. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of hangarau and putaiao curriculum and relevant progressions and support guidelines/materials. (Capability 1.1, 4.1 and 4.2)
  3. Develop knowledge of teaching approaches, resources, and learning and assessment activities based on a thorough knowledge of hangarau and putaiao curriculum content and pedagogy. (Capability 1.2, 2.2, 4.2 and 6.2)
  4. Communicate using te reo Maori discourse specific to putaiao and hangarau. (Capability 4.1, 4.2 and 6.2)
  5. Identify, select, and use digital technologies to solve a given authentic task or problem. (Capability 2.2 and 3.1)

To pass this course you need to submit all assessments and achieve a pass mark of at least 50% for the course. 

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15-point course.

A typical semester including the study/exam period totals approximately 15 weeks. On average, students are expected to spend 10 hours per week in each 15-point course that they are enrolled in.

For this 15-point course you should expect to commit 36 hours to delivery of the course. You can also reasonably expect to commit approximately 100-120 hours to independent learning. This may include reading (and more reading), note-taking, face-to-face and/or online discussion, writing, engaging in collaborative group work, problem solving, undertaking practical tasks, reflecting on learning, accessing learning and study resources, and assignment, test and/or exam preparation and completion.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including tutorials to complete components of the course.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including tutorials will be available as recordings if possible.

The course will not include live online events.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

There is no required textbook for this course. A range of articles and course materials will be provided through Talis, the University’s online reading list management system.
