Education and Social Work

Course Prescription

Develops understanding of the national curriculum document and the structure and content of the Learning Area, including content, pedagogical knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge required for developing effective learning environments. Develops planning, teaching, and assessment design consistent with national curriculum requirements and with theory and research within the Learning Area. Reflects critically on how responsive pedagogies impact on learning.

Course Overview

This course is a standard 30-point course delivered across two semesters (15 points per semester) and will include three assessments spread across the year. The course comprises developing pre-service teachers’ conceptual and procedural knowledge for the teaching profession. The course focuses on developing the key areas of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK), General Pedagogic Knowledge (GPK), and Assessment Knowledge (AK).

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Apply pedagogical content knowledge to enhance the achievement of all learners and critically reflect on the impact of implementing these. (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3)
  2. Demonstrate their capacity to design learning experiences, as well as their capacity to embed pedagogical practices, including digital technologies, known to enhance learning. (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3)
  3. Understand and apply assessment principles and practices that are consistent with national requirements to facilitate learning and to inform subsequent practice. (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3)

Workload Expectations

On average, students are expected to spend 300 hours in each 30-point course that they are enrolled in. Therefore, for this course you should expect to commit 24 hours per semester to direct contact via on-campus lectures. Students can also reasonably expect to commit approximately 250 hours over the two semesters to independent learning. This may include reading (and more reading), note-taking, face-to-face and/or online discussion, writing, engaging in collaborative group work, problem solving, undertaking practical tasks, reflecting on learning, accessing learning and study resources, and assessment preparation and completion.

Digital Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity

The University of Auckland will not tolerate cheating, or assisting others to cheat, and views cheating in coursework as a serious academic offence. The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced. This is a new course design for 2020 but it is based on similar curses which have been regularly informed by student feedback to ensure they are responsive to student expectations while preparing pre-service teachers or the demands of the teaching profession.
