Course Prescription

Develops understanding of the national curriculum document and the structure and content of the Learning Area, including content, pedagogical knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge required for developing effective learning environments. Develops planning, teaching, and assessment design consistent with national curriculum requirements and with theory and research within the Learning Area. Reflects critically on how responsive pedagogies impact on learning.

Course Overview

This course is a 45-point course delivered across two semesters. The course includes three assessments spread across the year. The course focuses on developing pre-service teachers’ conceptual and procedural knowledge for the teaching profession; Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK), General Pedagogic Knowledge (GPK), and Assessment Knowledge (AK).

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

To pass this course students must submit all assessment tasks and achieve an overall course mark of at 50%.

Workload Expectations

This course is a 45 point course which constitutes 450 hours of study.

For this course, you can expect a total  68 hours of face-to-face lectures with a specialist subject lecturer and 13 hours of asyncrohronous lectures (6 common lectures and 7 subject-based). You can also expect to commit approximately 350 hours to independent learning. This may include reading (and more reading), note-taking, face-to-face and/or online discussion, writing, engaging in collaborative group work, problem solving, undertaking practical tasks, reflecting on learning, accessing learning and study resources, and assignment, test and/or exam preparation and completion.

A typical semester including the study/exam period totals approximately 15 weeks. On average, students are expected to spend 20 hours per week in each 30-point course that they are enrolled in.

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including labs/tutorials/studios/clinics to complete components of the course.
Common lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including seminars/tutorials/labs/studios will not be available as recordings.
The course may include live online events as and if required.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

This was a new course design for 2022 but it is based on similar courses which have been regularly informed by student feedback to ensure the content and assessments are responsive to student expectations while preparing pre-service teachers for the demands of the teaching profession.

Other Information

This course is designed to prepare pre-servie teachers for teaching in a learning area specialisation e.g. English, Muisc etc. The course focuses on 'Design for Learning' which comprises developing your 'knowledge-that' and 'know-how-to' for the teaching profession.  The course focuses on developing the key areas of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK), General Pedagogic Knowledge (GPK), and Assessment. PCK is the recontextualisation of your subject knowledge for engaging and teaching diverse students, GPK comprises generic but also specific pedagogies apposite to your subject, and Assessment concerns the integrated use of data to inform your practice as a teacher.

There are three Common Assessment Tasks for this course which all subjects  complete at the same time.  There may be slight variations in assignment specifics for each subject which your course lecturer will make clear to you.

Academic Integrity
