Course Prescription

Investigates strategies to identify, analyse and respond to additional language learning needs of learners from early childhood to secondary settings. Acknowledges the role of first/heritage languages and culture, and philosophies of empowerment. Examines pedagogical frameworks for planning effective language and content integrated teaching. Students review, trial and modify tasks and learning sequences for specific teaching contexts.

Course Overview

In this course you will learn about several theories related to second language acquisition. You will be introduced to a range of strategies to support your multilingual learners and will have the opportunity to trial some of those in the classroom.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate understanding of the relationship between language development and learning (Capability 1, 3 and 6)
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the role of the first language and culture in the acquisition of a subsequent language (Capability 1, 3 and 6)
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of current issues in the field of language learning which impact on practice (Capability 3, 5 and 6)
  4. Develop a teaching and learning sequence and critically evaluate its effectiveness, with a reference to theories of language acquisition (Capability 1, 3, 4 and 5)
  5. Describe the language learning needs of learners and the language resources they bring to their learning context (Capability 2, 4, 6 and 8)
  6. Critically evaluate a variety of planning approaches for maximising learning opportunities in tasks drawn from across the curriculum (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7)

To pass this course you need to submit all assessments and achieve at least 50% for the course overall.

Workload Expectations

Following University workload guidelines,  a 30-point course represents about 300 hours of study. 

This course is a standard 30 point course.

A typical semester including the study/exam period totals approximately 15 weeks. On average, students are expected to spend 20 hours per week in each 30-point course that they are enrolled in. 

For this 30-point course you should expect to commit 50 hours to delivery of the course. You can also reasonably expect to commit approximately 240 hours to independent learning. This may include reading, note-taking, face-to-face and/or online discussion, writing, engaging in collaborative group work, problem solving, undertaking practical tasks, reflecting on learning, accessing learning and study resources, and assignment preparation and completion.

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities to complete components of the course.
The course will include online events including group discussions.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Based on student feedback some activities and  content will be offered online.
