Course Prescription

Introduces socio-political and historical contexts, including Te Tiriti o Waitangi in order to inform understandings of contemporary challenges and aspirations of Māori in educational contexts. Own social locations and cultural beliefs are examined for their impact on teacher practice and outcomes for Māori learners. Learning opportunities that critically integrate Māori language, knowledge and culture are identified and designed.

Course Overview

The course is designed to increase your understanding of a range of social, political and historical topics in Aotearoa New Zealand, including Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and the current challenges and aspirations of Māori learners in education. You will examine your own social and cultural beliefs and critique how these may impact on your teaching practice and on outcomes for Māori learners. Throughout the course, learning opportunities and assessments will help you to increase your knowledge of  Māori knowledge, language, and culture, and integrate it into your practice. You will also use this knowledge to design your own mātauranga Māori-focussed teaching resource that aligns with your teaching context.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Critically engage with socio-political and historical contexts, including Te Tiriti o Waitangi, to develop understandings of contemporary challenges, and aspirations of Maori in education and schooling. (Capability 1.1, 2.1, 2.2 and 6.2)
  2. Critically examine how own cultural assumptions and beliefs impact on practice and the cultural and educational outcomes of Maori learners. (Capability 2.1, 2.2 and 6.1)
  3. Design learning opportunities that critically integrate Maori language, knowledge and culture. (Capability 2.2, 3.1 and 6.1)
  4. Critically evaluate digital resources and their use to enhance pedagogical strategies. (Capability 2.1, 2.2, 3.1 and 6.1)

To pass this course you need to submit all assessments and achieve a pass mark of at least 50% for the course.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15-point course that is delivered initially via mass lectures (to students in all cohorts). There will be four breakout sessions for each educational sector. ECE and Primary students can expect to complete all course requirements by August.

A typical semester totals approximately 15 weeks. On average, students are expected to spend 10 hours per week in each 15-point course that they are enrolled in.

For this 15-point course you should expect to commit 36 hours to delivery of the course. You can also reasonably expect to commit approximately 100-120 hours to independent learning. This may include reading (and more reading), note-taking, face-to-face and/or online discussion, writing, engaging in collaborative group work, problem solving, undertaking practical tasks, reflecting on learning, accessing learning and study resources, and assignment preparation and completion.

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities, including sector-specific breakout sessions which will be held on campus.

The initial five weeks of lectures are online and will be available as recordings at the start of each week. The four sector-specific sessions will be available as recordings, where possible. These will be uploaded to Canvas following the on-campus sessions.

The course will not include live online events.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

There is no required textbook for this course.  A range of articles, policy documents, and other resources will be provided through Talis, the University’s online reading list management system, which is accessed on Canvas.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Changes that haven been made to the course based on student feedback:

Workload: Some students found the workload heavy and requested a reduction in readings and fewer assignments. Changes:  We have checked the reading and assessment load in other courses in the Grad. Dip. to ensure the workload in this course is fair. Reading quizzes will be ungraded this year, so students can use these to self-check their understanding, but they will not contribute to course completion or the overall grade.

Lecture recordings:
Some students found the recorded lectures unengaging, with inconsistent sound quality. Students requested that lecturers record their videos in a more engaging tone and add interactive activities (such as quizzes) during the lectures to break up the content. Changes:  I have shared the student feedback about lecture recordings with the course lecturers and we will all aim to improve the delivery, sound quality, and interactivity of these sessions.

Academic Integrity

The University of Auckland will not tolerate cheating, or assisting others to cheat, and views cheating in coursework as a serious academic offence. The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced. This requirement also applies to sources on the internet. A student's assessed work may be reviewed against online source material using computerised detection mechanisms.
