Course Prescription

Addresses current theories, approaches and practices for language teaching and learning for students learning English as an additional language in New Zealand schools and Early Childhood Centres. The course focuses on the needs of learners in all curriculum areas, emphasising the importance of understanding diverse learners' languages and cultures across the curriculum.

Course Overview

Edprofst 318 is an introduction to teaching and learning English as an additional language.  It begins with key understandings about how learners acquire their first and new  languages. It then moves from knowing the learners  to the practical use of relevant resources, approaches and strategies  for teaching English, particularly within  primary school contexts.

Prerequisite: 225 points passed in the BEd(Tchg) Primary Specialisation or 90 points passed at Stage I from the BEd(TESOL) sSchedule

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Analyse the requirements, key principles and issues relevant to the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) in relation to diverse learners’ languages and cultures, acknowledging the Treaty of Waitangi. (Capability 1.1 and 2.2)
  2. Identify key features of first (L1) and subsequent (L2) language acquisition theories. (Capability 1.1)
  3. Show development of personal, professional pedagogy for English Language Learners (ELLs) /Bilingual Learners (BLs) including Maori learners, based on relevant research and on current Ministry of Education (MoE) documents. (Capability 4.2, 6.1 and 6.3)
  4. Critically analyse and use texts to plan teaching-learning sequences that support effective practice for specified learners. (Capability 1.2, 2.2, 3.1 and 6.3)

Assessment requirements to the satisfaction of the examiner:
To pass this course students must submit all assessment tasks and get an overall course mark of at least 50%.

Workload Expectations

Following University workload guidelines, a standard 15-point course represents approximately 150 hours of study, and a 30-point course represents about 300 hours of study.

This course is a standard 15-point course.  A typical semester including the study/exam period totals approximately 15 weeks. On average, students are expected to spend 10 hours per week in each 15-point course that they are enrolled in.  

 For this 15-point course you should expect to commit 36 hours to delivery of the course. (2 x 2-hour sessions for 9 weeks). You can also reasonably expect to commit approximately 100-120 hours to independent learning. This may include reading (and more reading), note-taking, face-to-face and/or online discussion, writing, engaging in collaborative group work, problem solving, undertaking practical tasks, reflecting on learning, accessing learning and study resources, and assignment completion.

This course is offered in two delivery modes:

Campus Experience

This is the course for students enrolled in the B Ed Primary.  Attendance is required at scheduled activities including both lectures and workshops (applied sessions) to complete components of the course.
Lectures and workshops will not be available as full recordings, but key content ppts. will contain audio additions and further links to on line resources, following face-to-face delivery.
The course will not include live online events, unless further specified and communicated (e.g. Covid-related online  changes).
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Online

"The online offering is only available for those students enrolled in the B Ed TESSOL programme approved by the Programme Director. The online offering is not available to B Ed Primary students”.

Attendance is expected at scheduled online activities to complete credit for components of the course.
Attendance on campus is not required for assessments.
Where possible, study material will be  released progressively throughout the course. Key content  ppts. will contain audio additions and links to on line resources.
This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas, which also includes  reading lists and  weekly resources on Modules, including on-line links. It is expected that these are accessed regularly (before,  after, and often during classes).

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

There has been a high level of student satisfaction in previous courses, related to the  relevance of content and assignments to teaching English as an additional language in schools, and the quality of resources for learning.

Key lecture content within ppts. will also contain audio enhancement  following delivery, to support revision. It is expected that you access the weekly resources and communication regularly, both before and after each session. 

Academic Integrity
