Course Prescription

Critically examines the implications for effective learning and teaching from a range of perspectives. Addresses what teachers need to know about learners, and how they develop and learn, how to use evidence to promote learning, how to apply the strategies that support responsive teaching and the development of self-regulating learners and teachers.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Critique contemporary perspectives on the relationship between learning, teaching and assessment (Capability 1.1 and 2.2)
  2. Critically examine what it is to learn effectively, teach responsively, including the role of digital technologies and be self-regulating (Capability 2.2 and 5.1)
  3. Understand teacher expectations and teacher expectation processes to enhance student achievement, self-belief, particularly in relation to Maori learners and our obligation to Te Tiritio Waitangi. (Capability 2.1 and 6.3)
  4. Use inquiry cycles to demonstrate a deep understanding of how students develop cognitively, behaviourally, socially, emotionally and physically, and how students' knowledge of student's development should impact teacher practice. (Capability 2.2 and 3.1)

Students must complete all assessments and achieve a total of at least 50 marks (or 50%) to pass this course.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard [15] point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
