Course Prescription

An advanced analysis of the theoretical perspectives of social, cultural, political and psychological issues in relation to literacies education. Aspects of theories and practices in literacies including raising the achievement of Māori and Pasifika students and students from diverse language backgrounds, and the influence of diversity and technology on literacy, will be analysed and evaluated.

Course Overview

This course is designed for literacy leaders, RT Lits, classroom teachers, specialist teachers and other literacy professionals. You will engage in critical analysis of research and practice. You will interrogate theories and evidence. You will bring these skills to bear in considering persistent issues of literacy provision, policy and practice in Aotearoa New Zealand.

To pass this course students must submit all assessment tasks and get an overall course mark of at least 50%.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 30-point course.

A typical semester including the study/exam period totals approximately 15 weeks. On average, students are expected to spend 20 hours per week in each 30-point course that they are enrolled in.

For this 30-point course you should expect to commit 36 hours to delivery of the course. You can also reasonably expect to commit approximately 200-240 hours to independent learning. This may include reading (and more reading), note-taking, face-to-face and/or online discussion, writing, engaging in collaborative group work, problem solving, undertaking practical tasks, reflecting on learning, accessing learning and study resources, and assignment, test and/or exam preparation and completion.

Delivery Mode

Online

Attendance is expected at scheduled online activities including tutorials to complete components of the course.
The course will include live online events including a block course and  tutorials and these will be recorded.
Attendance on campus is not required.
Where possible, study material will be released progressively throughout the course.
This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

We have adjusted the delivery of the course so that students do not need to attend in person, but do have tutorials throughout the semester in non-school hours. We have adjusted assignments to include collaborative elements that contribute to your work. We have adjusted the assignment structure, so that each builds a platform for the next. That way, you can expect to  incorporate the feedback from one assignment in your next one.

Academic Integrity
