EDUC 347 : Ideas of the University Student

Education and Social Work

Course Prescription

Offers a multi-disciplinary exploration of the 'idea of the university student' through history, popular culture, and social theory to show how that idea has changed over time and who it has included and excluded along the way. Students will critically reflect on their own diverse positions and experiences as university students in relation to these powerful but shifting ideas about university education and its imagined student.

Course Overview

In this course, you will be introduced to a range of ideas about who the university student has been, is and might be. Together, we will explore how some very different ideas of the university student reflect historical changes in university education and, in turn, have influenced the physical spaces of the campus.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Understand several ideas of the university student and how they are entangled with the history and place of the university. (Capability 1, 3 and 4)
  2. Demonstrate critical curiosity towards your own and others’ experiences as university students. (Capability 1, 3, 4 and 6)
  3. Be able to critically interrogate dominant or commonsense ideas of the university student. (Capability 1, 3, 4 and 6)
  4. Be able to identify and draw on a range of academic literature and archival materials to think, discuss and write originally about the idea of the university student in relation to the place of the university. (Capability 3, 4 and 6)
  5. Be able to design and implement a group intervention embodying and/or questioning a particular idea of the student in relation to the place of the university. (Capability 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8)

To pass this course, students must submit all assessments and achieve at least 50% for the course.

Workload Expectations

For this 15-point course, please commit 36 hours to delivery time (3 hours a week for 12 weeks) and approximately 100-120 hours to independent learning. This will include reading (and more reading), note-taking, writing, engaging in collaborative group work, accessing learning and study resources, and assignment completion. On a weekly basis, this means 3 hours of contact time (2 hours of lecture plus a 1-hour tutorial), and about 8-10 hours of independent study each week.

Campus Experience

Lectures and tutorials (including field-trips) will NOT be available as recordings as the course is discussion-based.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

In this course, you will also be asked to give anonymous feedback half-way through to help the course director fine-tune the course as it is being taught. You are also encouraged to make suggestions directly to the course director or, anonymously, via the class rep.

Academic Integrity
