Course Prescription

The atmosphere, oceans and land make up the dynamic environment of Aotearoa New Zealand. A range of phenomena with natural beauty can be described elegantly with simple scientific laws. This course establishes the physical principles underlying nature, empowering students to explain everyday environmental phenomena. These principles provide the foundation to unravel the science of Earth, climate and environmental change, and energy systems.

Course Overview

Course concepts are delivered with practical studio exercises, lectures, and labs set up as themes linked to present-day topics. These topics include the latest research and understanding of our climate, the environment, and the solid Earth.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Critically evaluate weather, climate and environmental change relevant to a wide range of study and career paths. (Capability 1, 2, 4 and 6)
  2. Discover and develop physical concepts that link the solid Earth, oceans, and atmosphere systems. (Capability 1, 2, 3 and 5)
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of of New Zealand’s energy resources, consumption and production and compare us to the world. (Capability 4, 5 and 6)
  4. Be able to take experimental data using simple equipment and carry out the analysis of these data to uncover the physics of everyday geophysical phenomena. (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)

Special Requirements

Students must participate in laboratories and studio-style teaching on campus.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15-point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15-point course they are enrolled in.

For this course, a typical weekly workload includes:

  • 2 hours of studio-style lectures with student-participated activities
  • 2 hours of laboratory
  • 2 hours of reading and thinking about the course materials
  • 4 hours of writing up activities and lab reports

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including labs and studios to receive credit for components of the course.
Learning activities including labs and studios will only be available as recordings for those parts that can be recorded.
The course will not include live online events. Attendance on campus is required for the exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Resources for the individual weekly themed labs and tutorials will be made available to download on Canvas.

Student Feedback

During the course Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the staff responsible for the course and staff-student consultative committees.

At the end of the course students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback.

Your feedback helps to improve the course and its delivery for all students.
