Course Overview
This team-taught interdisciplinary course examines key aspects of "integration" and the multi-faceted European Union:
-Historical background on Europe and the European Union
-The institutions of the EU: their structures, legal underpinnings and decision-making functions
-Political challenges presently facing the EU: expansion, Euroscepticism, foreign policy, security and emerging threats
-The European Single Market, EU budget, trade and economy policy
-Culture, identity and citizenship within a diverse Europe
-Responses to the COVID-19 pandemic across Europe and within the European Union

Learning Outcomes
- Understand and compare disciplinary knowledge and practices at an intermediate level across several subject areas in the Humanities and Social Sciences (Capability 1.2, 1.3, 2.2, 2.3, 4.2, 4.3, 6.2 and 6.3)
- Assess and interpret a variety of evidence in order to construct reasoned arguments in both written and oral formats (Capability 1.2, 1.3, 2.2, 2.3, 3.2, 4.2, 4.3, 5.2, 6.2 and 6.3)

Workload Expectations
This Summer School course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 20 hours per week involved in each 15 point Summer School course that they are enrolled in.
For this course, you can expect 4 hours of lectures, a 1 hour tutorial, and on average 10 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 5 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation per week.

This course is offered in two delivery modes:
Campus Experience
Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including tutorials to receive credit for components of the course. Attendance is required for the Q & A sessions which are the basis for Assignments 1 and 2 and the preparatory tutorials (which require group work ) leading up to those sessions.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including tutorials will be available as recordings.
The course will include live online events including group discussions/tutorials.
Attendance on campus is not required for the test.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable delivery.
Online (in exceptional circumstances only, contact the Course Convenor)

This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.
Student Feedback
At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
