EXERSCI 101 : Foundations of Exercise and Sport Sciences
2022 Semester One (1223) (15 POINTS)
This course will introduce students to the four sub-disciplines of exercise sciences and provide an understanding of the scope of the discipline. Students will primarily develop a fundamental understanding of human systems physiology necessary for human movement. This course is essential for laying the foundations for understanding the effects of exercise on the human body and further study in Exercise Sciences. This course is a mandatory course for students majoring in Exercise Sciences and those intending to take part in the Applied Exercise and Sports Science Pathway for their undergraduate degree.

- Describe mechanisms of homeostasis in the context of Sport and Exercise Sciences. (Capability 1)
- Explain the functions of the major physiological systems in humans, specifically the muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine and renal systems, using the sub-disciplines of Sport and Exercise Sciences. (Capability 1, 2 and 3)
- Relate the importance of the immune, gastrointestinal and integumentary systems to performance in Sport and Exercise Sciences. (Capability 1)
- Interpret data to explain physiological mechanisms relevant for Sport and Exercise Sciences. (Capability 2, 3, 4 and 5)

Exercise Sciences has a dedicated Tuākana space at the City Campus (301-183). Exercise Sciences Tuākana space consists of a few personal computers, a collection of prescribed textbooks of Exercise Sciences courses, personal study and relaxing areas with access to shared kitchen facilities. Tuākana students enrolled in any Exercise Sciences course is most welcome to make use of these facilities not only to support their learning but also to build whanaungatanga.
Special Tuākana tutorials for EXERSCI 101 will be held every week, twice a week.
This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.
For this course, you can expect two hours of lectures per week and one two-hour tutorial per fortnight i.e., six tutorials across the semester. This should be supplemented with at least eight hours per week of personal study time. Personal study involves time required for you to read, think and make notes about the content you've learnt in the week, attempt tutorial questions prior to class, complete quizzes/assignments and prepare for the midterm test and final exam.
Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including lectures and tutorials to complete components of the course. Lectures will be available as recordings. Tutorials will NOT be available as recordings.
Attendance on campus is required for the test and exam. The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.
The most appropriate chapter readings from the following textbooks will be adopted to form a custom textbook for this course. The custom prescribed textbook will be available as an e-book and as a physical copy (Library call number TBC).

During the course Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the staff responsible for the course and staff-student consultative committees.
At the end of the course students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback.
