Course Prescription

Provides students with an opportunity to collect data in an area of interest, with the aim of validating an area of study towards their theses.

Course Overview

EXERSCI 702 is targeted at postgraduate research students (PGDipSci, 1st year MSc and BScHons in Exercise Sciences) and consists of an individualized project involving laboratory work or research, undertaken in any of the major areas of study in Exercise Sciences.

Work is conducted under supervision of an academic staff member and will comprise of a project having and involving the following:
  1. A clear scientific rationale and purpose
  2. A review of relevant research literature
  3. The collection and analysis of data meeting objectives to address the purpose
  4. A clear presentation of the results and insightful interpretation of the data
  5. A cohesive, written report inclusive of the above elements
  6. A verbal‐visual presentation to department staff and graduate students

Tuākana

Exercise Sciences has a dedicated Tuākana space at the City Campus 301-183 [1]. Exercise Sciences Tuākana space consists of several personal computers, a collection of prescribed textbooks of Exercise Sciences courses, personal study and relaxing areas with access to shared kitchen facilities. Tuākana students [2] enrolled in any Exercise Sciences course are most welcome to make use of these facilities, not only to support their learning but also to build whanaungatanga. Workload Expectations

This course is a [15] point project-based course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

Supervisory hours will be determined by the nature of the project and the supervisor’s requirements. Recommended contact time with supervisor is 1h per week, minimum.

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities (e.g., supervisory hours, data collection) as determined together with the supervisor.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

note: EXERSCI 702 is not evaluated through SET or Qualtrics. Course experience is discussed and improved ongoingly between students and supervisors.
