EXERSCI 704 : Advanced Techniques in Biomechanics

Course Prescription

A laboratory-based course which explores the current biomechanics methodology for quantifying human movements. Emphasis on motion capture, force measurement, accelerometers, clinical gait analysis, balance assessment, and electromyography. Students will apply biomechanical methods to clinical assessment.

Course Overview

This course is designed to give students in the Department of Exercise Sciences the opportunity to learn and practice the advanced techniques in biomechanics with an emphasis on motion capture, force measurement, accelerometers, clinical gait analysis, balance assessment, and electromyography. Students are expected to conduct themselves as professionals in their practicum environments, as well as to theoretically analyse aspects of their experience and to communicate this analysis in ways that will be assessed by the course co-ordinators. Knowledge learned from this paper can be of great help in understanding these techniques and applying them to occupational movements, gait, and sporting activities. EXERSCI 303 (Biomechanics 2) or an equivalent course is the prerequisite for this paper.

  1. Evaluate the practical and theoretical capabilities and limitations of equipment used in biomechanical investigations. (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
  2. Identify and describe research ideas in biomechanics (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
  3. Conduct and report the findings of a biomechanics research project (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 120 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 12 hours of lectures, a 30 hour tutorial and labs, 20 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 58 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.
