Course Prescription

Develops specialist knowledge in clinical exercise physiology practice, clinical exercise testing, and the effects of medication on exercise responses in people with cardiovascular, pulmonary and metabolic health conditions. Explores the evidence-based, physiological foundations underlying exercise assessment and prescription for people with these chronic health conditions.

Course Overview

This course provides the advanced physiological and technical knowledge required to accurately assess and prescribe exercise for people living with common cardiovascular, metabolic and pulmonary conditions. This course provides the theoretical basis of knowledge that is applied in the complementing practicum courses as students train to become practicing clinical exercise physiologists. This is a mandatory course for students who are enrolled in the 120-point PG Dip Sci (CEP) or the 240-point MSc CEP specializations.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Apply patient-centred and ethical healthcare practice in a clinical exercise physiology setting. (Capability 1 and 6)
  2. Distinguish how physiological responses to exercise are influenced by the pathology of cardiopulmonary and metabolic conditions. (Capability 1 and 2)
  3. Evaluate health-related outcomes for safe and effective exercise management of people with cardiopulmonary and metabolic conditions. (Capability 1 and 2)
  4. Design evidence-based exercise prescription to improve health and functional capacity of people with cardiopulmonary and metabolic conditions. (Capability 3 and 5)
  5. Appraise current exercise rehabilitation practices in New Zealand and globally for people with chronic cardiopulmonary and metabolic conditions. (Capability 2 and 6)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 4 hours of seminars, 2 hours of online work, reading and thinking about the content and 4 hours of work on assignments and/or case study preparation per week.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including seminars to receive credit for components of the course. These seminars will require active participation from students. The learning activities in the seminars will not be available as recordings.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
