Course Prescription

Students will apply specialist knowledge to develop skills in evidence-based assessment and intervention across health care settings, focusing on interdisciplinary rehabilitation of neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions through the lifespan. The emphasis will be on normal development and milestones to underpin learning in paediatric rehabilitation. Motor learning principles will be applied to rehabilitate mobility, walking, balance and upper-limb function, including integration of assistive technology.

Course Overview

The course will provide students with the knowledge, communication, clinical reasoning and practical skills to manage clients with a variety of neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions. Students will learn to manage patients with neurological/neurodevelopmental conditions, through reablement and rehabilitation approaches informed by the latest research evidence base. An understanding of normal development and milestones across the lifespan will underpin learning in paediatric rehabilitation. Students will develop skills in assessment and observational analysis to identify activity limitations and impairments. Students will learn to use clinical reasoning, integration of client-goals and the principles of neural plasticity and motor learning in the planning and delivery of interventions.

Client scenarios will develop clinical reasoning skills underpinning safe, effective and holistic delivery of therapy. These will include case-based scenarios, group discussions, and in person assessments with clients who have a neurological condition. Students will develop the communication and practical skills needed to competently assess and safely and effectively treat clients with neurological disorders, understand the time course of recovery or neurodegeneration as well as develop strategies and programmes for client self-management. The continuum of care from the acute to community setting will be discussed and the physiotherapist’s role and responsibilities in the multidisciplinary health care team will be explored.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the pathological processes, symptoms, medical management and clinical course for neurological, neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions and how this influences the assessment and delivery of physiotherapy. (Capability 1 and 3)
  2. Demonstrate the ability to select and safely deliver a range of interventions to manage neurological conditions (Capability 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8)
  3. Demonstrate advanced, culturally safe, sensitive and responsive communication skills in client and whanau education relating to neurological conditions (Capability 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8)
  4. Evaluate the evidence base for commonly used neurological physiotherapy interventions and new and emerging interventions (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8)
  5. Demonstrate the application of clinical reasoning, integration of client goals, and the principles of motor learning and neural plasticity in the selection and delivery of an effective (Capability 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7)
  6. Critically reflect on the physiotherapist’s contribution to the interdisciplinary management of neurological conditions, including identifying opportunities to work collaboratively with other health care professionals on the continuum from the acute to community setting (Capability 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8)
  7. Synthesis disciplinary knowledge and practice of paediatric rehabilitation, including normal development and developmental milestones. (Capability 3)
  8. Demonstrate effective integration of Maori and Pacific models of health and wellbeing into the planning and equitable delivery of physiotherapy service provision to clients with neurological conditions (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8)
  9. Demonstrate the ability to research, identify and describe physiotherapy treatment modalities for clients with neurological conditions (Capability 3, 4, 5 and 7)
  10. Critically reflect on the management, within the interdisciplinary team, of clients with neurological conditions (Capability 3, 4, 5 and 6)

Special Requirements

Attendance is required for the practical and clinic components of the course.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 36 hours of lectures, 18 hours in person laboratories/clinic, 54 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 42 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including labs and clinics to complete the practical components of the course.
Attendance is also expected at lectures, however lectures will be available as recordings if attendance is not possible. Other learning activities including seminars, labs and clinics will not be recorded.
Attendance on campus is required for the tests.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a block delivery.
