FINANCE 361 : Modern Investment Theory and Management

Course Prescription

Portfolio theory and equilibrium asset pricing models and empirical tests. Portfolio management (forecasting, construction, administration and evaluation) including issues relating to fixed interest and international equity investment. A continuation of the material introduced in FINANCE 261.

Course Overview

The goal of the course is to provide students with an advanced understanding of how financial markets function and how assets are priced and traded. This paper covers fundamental concepts related to the portfolio decisions of individual and institutional investors. Using the concept of risk-return trade-off as a unifying theme, it discusses the techniques and implications of efficient portfolio diversification and the allocation of assets among different securities. The valuation of equity and fixed income securities are covered in some depth.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Implement the mean-variance mathematics of portfolio optimization. (Capability 1 and 3)
  2. Understand and distinguish between concepts of risk underlying different models of asset returns such as CAPM, APT, benchmark factor models etc (Capability 1, 2 and 4.2)
  3. Understand the impact of behavioural biases and limits to arbitrage on market efficiency (Capability 1, 2 and 4.2)
  4. Value equity and fixed income securities using both fundamental and relative valuation approaches (Capability 1 and 3)
  5. Engage with real world data in order to solve practical investment problems (Capability 1 and 3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 3 hours of lectures, a 1 hour tutorial, 2 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 4 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.
