Course Prescription

Engages students with concepts, materials and methods of making that are indigenous to Aotearoa. Explores ways of developing and creating contemporary art in fibre and textile.

Course Overview

The heart of this project is taonga, created from fibre and textile, e.g., kākahu and kete muka. From this origin, students are to find ways to connect to these treasured objects as both a reference and a point of departure for making contemporary art. Students are encouraged to draw upon the traditions of fibre and textile that belong to their cultural heritage and create relationships to taonga through similarities in technology, making methods, materiality, formal qualities, and use.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Apply Maori methods and materials to create contemporary art forms that draw upon or reference one's cultural heritage (Capability 1, 3 and 4)

Teaching & Learning Methods

This course consists of project-centred learning. Based in kanohi ki te kanohi environments, learning occurs through:
making, thinking, dialogue and reflection. In undertaking these activities, diverse perspectives are shared, and knowledge, concepts and experience - relevant to the field of Toi Māori and Contemporary Art are gained.
Specific learning formats include practical in-class exercises, group discussions, group critiques, workshops, seminars and 1-1's with both colleagues and your tutor.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in (during teaching weeks). Each teaching week includes 3 hours of teaching contact and 7 hours of independent study time.

For this course, you can expect 36 hours of contact/class time, and 114 hours of self-directed study working on independent research, studio assignments, reading, and written work.


Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including workshops, tutorials, studios to complete and receive credit for components of the course. Learning activities including workshops, seminars, tutorials and studio practice will not be available as recordings.
The activities for the course are scheduled as standard weekly delivery.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Students are expected to supply their own journals/workbooks for technical notes and developmental drawings. Tools and equipment essential to instruction are provided. Beyond the point of initial instruction, students are expected to provide materials.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

The response ratio on the set evaluation of this course was 34.8%. For the question "Overall, I was satisfied with the quality of this course" The course received  100% (25% Agree and 75% Strongly agree). A good result, even so one aspect I would change is to develop whanaungatanga within the course, developing more activities for students to build connections with each other so that the group work is more successful and the environment of the class is socially warmer. Some tensions amongst students could have been mitigated better - this was largely to do with resistance to the understanding of Te Tiriti values related to the course... whanaungatanga, manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga. A little foreign to some of our international students.

Academic Integrity

The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced.
