Course Prescription

Covers the conceptual and practical possibilities of digital photography. Students will experiment with a wide range of image-making technologies including SLR digital cameras. Lighting considerations and a range of options for printing digital photos will be explored. Contemporary photographic practices will be covered within the context of global image circulation.

Course Overview

A skill focus for this course considers the importance of technical learning for digital cameras including shutter speed, aperture and related camera functionality. Students work within a digital workflow. Postproduction skills include file management, colour space and colour correction, and preparing files for a range of outputs. Creative emphasis explores the potential to build series and sequences through digital photography including the output of digital slideshows, portfolios, and online purposes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop and demonstrate technical skills in a range of digital photography technologies. (Capability 3 and 5)
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of a range of research and development methods for producing creative work. (Capability 3, 4 and 6)
  3. Develop skills in generating, exploring and understanding a range of material effects in relation to lens-based art practices through the production of studio work. (Capability 6, 7 and 8)
  4. Apply skills in idea generation and material effects in relation to the production of studio work. (Capability 4 and 6)
  5. Identify and critically evaluate relationships between digital images and their use within cultural contexts including sustainable methods. (Capability 1, 2 and 8)

Teaching & Learning Methods

Project-centred learning is used to support the development of students’ creative working practices. Based in kanohi ki te kanohi environments, dialogue sits at the centre, creating opportunities to share diverse perspectives, knowledge and concepts. A broad range of methods are used across studio, workshop and digital spaces including: individual and collaborative projects, practical workshops, small group feedback sessions, lectures, tutorials, seminars, readings, guest speakers, gallery visits, working with community groups.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in. Each week includes 3 hours of teaching contact and 7 hours of independent study time.

For this course, you can expect 36 hours of contact/class time, 96 hours of self-directed study working on assignments and 18 hours of preparatory reading/research.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including studio and workshop activities to complete components of the course. Lectures will be available as presentations. Other learning activities including seminars and studio activities will not be available as recordings.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Students are expected to supply their own studio materials for this course. This will vary depending on the project being undertaken at the time. Lecturers and technical staff will advise students accordingly at the outset of each project.

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

No major changes were recommended. Ongoing management for student learning of lighting methods within structured group learning situations. This can be a challenge on campus due to reduced group numbers permitted within the facilities for health and safety reasons.
