Course Prescription

Explores the role of the audience in art and examines the work of artists and writers who have challenged assumptions about audience. Students will make creative work with a particular audience in mind using their own choice of means and/or modes of encounter. They will explore how to negotiate the ethics of working with others, including working with mana whenua.

Course Overview

Explores the role of the audience in art and examines the work of artists and writers who have challenged assumptions about audience. Students will make a creative work that engages a particular audience – selected from a range of options - using their own choice of means and/or modes of encounter. In this course students will also explore how to negotiate the ethics of working with others, through a case study of an artwork. Aspects of cultural safety will also be addressed, including working as, and with, mana whenua.
Course work includes:
1. Students completing a case study of  2 artworks that speaks to and engages either a) a particular audience (your neighbourhood, your family, children, your community) OR b) a particular site (Auckland Domain, Elam School of Fine Arts, A local park  or public space)
2. Project proposal for artwork
3. Final Artwork as developed from your proposal + research portfolio

Prerequisite: FINEARTS 101, 102, 103, 104, or FINEARTS 110, 113 and FINEARTS 111 or 112

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

Teaching & Learning Methods

Based in kanohi ki te kanohi environments, learning occurs through:
making, thinking, testing, dialogue and reflection. In undertaking these activities, diverse perspectives are shared, and knowledge, concepts and experience, relevant to the field of contemporary art are gained.
Specific learning formats include case studies, group discussions, group critiques, small group workshops, seminars and 1-1 with both colleagues and your tutor.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 30 point course and students are expected to spend 20 hours per week involved in each 30 point course that they are enrolled in. Each week includes 5 hours of teaching contact and 15 hours of independent study time. For this course, you can expect 60 hours of studio contact. In addition, you are expected to complete 180 hours of independent studio learning including 24 hours of preparatory reading.

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities to receive credit for the course. The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Students are expected to supply their own journals for technical notes and developmental drawings. Tools and equipment essential to instruction are provided. Beyond the point of initial instruction, students are expected to provide materials.
