Creative Arts and Industries

Course Prescription

A studio-based investigation of a specific medium of contemporary practice. Students will develop advanced conceptual capabilities in that medium and realise finished works to an advanced standard. These specialised outcomes will be informed by complementary acquisition of advanced technical skills and theoretical knowledge in co-requisite courses focused on the same medium.

Course Overview

To expand understanding of contemporary practice and provide the basis for independent artistic work, students respond to a series of 'provocations' (or outlines) and create artwork iteratively and critically. At key stages along this pathway and in kanohi ki te kanohi environments there are opportunities for peer dialogue and review (or studio critique). Central to the course's kaupapa is the reflective and imaginative engagement with the interplay of ideas, contexts, processes and materials involved in making artwork to support student capacity to undertake contemporary practice independently as artistic research.

  1. Demonstrate critical understandings of relevant contexts informing the creative work (Capability 1, 3 and 4)
  2. Show engagement in an effective research method allowing the creative process and its outcomes to be questioned and developed (Capability 3, 4 and 6)
  3. Present creative work of value to the field of contemporary art (Capability 3, 5 and 7)

Teaching & Learning Methods

Students are supported t0 develop studio based artistic research through conversation, planning, task setting, experimentation and feedback. Based in kanohi ki te kanohi environments, independent research and group dialogue sit at the centre, creating opportunities to learn and share diverse perspectives, knowledge and approaches to practicing contemporary art.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in. Each week includes 3 hours of teaching contact and 7 hours of independent study time.

Unless by prior arrangement, attendance is expected at scheduled activities on Wednesdays to receive credit for the course.

Academic Integrity
