Course Prescription

A workshop-based exploration of a specific medium of contemporary practice. Students will develop advanced technical skills in that medium as an area of targeted inquiry. These advanced skills will complement the attainment of specialised creative studio capabilities and advanced theoretical knowledge in co-requisite courses focused on the same medium.

Course Overview

Through technical instruction and individual extension, students acquire and evaluate skills and techniques enhancing their ability as practitioners of contemporary art. Best practice and  Health and Safety protocols underpin the kaupapa helping to create professionalism, integrity and independence in production processes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Acquire and apply technical instruction in a series of tests (Capability 1, 4 and 6)
  2. Extend and independently experiment with the technical knowledge acquired (Capability 1 and 5)

Teaching & Learning Methods

Workshop-centred learning is used to support the development of students’ technical skill and independence. Based in kanohi ki te kanohi environments, technical instruction and independent extension and experimentation sit at the centre, creating opportunities to learn, adopt and customise new technical perspectives, knowledge and approaches.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

Each week includes 3 hours of teaching contact and 7 hours of independent study time.

For this course, you can expect 36 hours of studio contact which includes 12 hours of workshop instruction. In addition you are expected to complete 84 hours of independent studio learning including 12 hours of preparatory reading.

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities to receive credit for the course. The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Students are expected to supply their own journals for technical notes and developmental drawings. Tools and equipment essential to instruction are provided. Beyond the point of initial instruction, students are expected to provide materials.
