Course Prescription

Analytical techniques: GC, HPLC, GC-MS chromatography, IR and UV spectroscopy. Applications: toxicology, illicit drugs, sports drugs, racing chemistry. Physical and trace evidence.

Course Overview

The lecturers first introduce some basic analytical techniques and then their use in forensic analysis is presented. The areas of forensic work covered are drug analysis, paint, and glass, shoeprints, hydrocarbon analysis, fingerprints, firearms and fibers.
This is the most practically-oriented of all the courses, with practical classes most weeks. The practical classes are designed to introduce students to standard analysis techniques for physical evidence and illicit drug screening. Analyses carried out in the practicals will be largely performed on material collected by the students from supplied exhibits. Success in the search of evidence itmes is therefore important.
All practicals will be assessed. The type of assessment associated with each practical may differ.

Students without a chemistry background may need to do some additional study. Your lecturers will advise you of this.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of of the Misuse of Drugs Act and the classification of illicit drugs (Capability 1 and 2)
  2. Apply basic analytical techniques to the analysis of complex forensic materials (Capability 1, 2 and 3)
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of of the collection and comparison of shoemarks and fingerprints (Capability 1 and 2)
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the value and analysis of physical evidence (Capability 1, 2 and 3)

Special Requirements

 Attendance at the laboratories is a compulsory part of this course. Students must wear safety glasses, covered footwear, and a lab coat before entering the laboratory and must keep these on until after exiting the laboratory. Jandals or other open shoes are not satisfactory footwear. Students who wear prescription spectacles are required to wear safety glasses over their spectacles. 

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15-point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15-point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 22 hours of lectures, 18 hours of practicals, 20 hours of reading and thinking about the content, and 40 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience or Online

This course is offered in two delivery modes:

Campus Experience

Attendance is at scheduled activities including labs and lectures.
Lectures will be available as recordings. 
The course may include live online lectures.
Attendance on campus is not required for the test.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Online

The course may include live online events including [group discussions/tutorials/lectures] and these will be recorded.
Attendance on campus is not required for the exam.
Where possible, study material will be released progressively throughout the course.
This course runs to the University semester/quarter timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

If necessary, practical content will be modified for online delivery.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Reading may be given during the course. There is no specified textbook.

During the course Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the staff responsible for the course and staff-student consultative committees.
