Course Prescription

A research essay on an aspect of forensic science.

Course Overview

  1. This is the second semester of a double semester course, and will be taken by students who begin the postgraduate diploma in either the first or second semesters. A list of possible topics will be distributed to students at the start of the semester. The final essay will be 15000 words. The students will be assigned essay-specific mentors.

Prerequisite: Permission of Programme Director Restriction: FORENSIC 705 To complete this course students must enrol in FORENSIC 707 A and B, or FORENSIC 707

  1. Develop critical reading skills centring around appropriate material for the topic. (Capability 2)

  3. Apply scientific literature to the issues raised in the selected topic. (Capability 3)
  4. Develop large scale writing skills (Capability 4)

The marks for the essay plan, delivered in the first semester of study, are combined with the marks for the seminar and full essay delivered in the second semester of study. To a double semester total of  100%, the plan and the seminar are 10% each, and the essay is 80%.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 50 hours of reading and thinking about the content, and 20 hours of writing. Preparation of your seminar may take around 4 hours. You will also be expected to attend the class seminars which are usually over 2 days and total around 6 hours

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

As stated above there is an expectation that all students will attend the seminar sessions. If we are in a level of covid alert where face-to-face meetings are not possible, the seminars will be held via Teams or Zoom.

Other than the seminars there is no direct contact, so the level of covid alert should not affect the students reading or writing.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

A starter list of reading and resources will be delivered to the student by the essay mentor. The mentor will also be available for discussion of the essay structure and content.

Student Feedback

During the course Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the staff responsible for the course and staff-student consultative committees.

At the end of the course students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback.

Your feedback helps to improve the course and its delivery for all students.
