GEOG 746 : Applied Coastal Geomorphology

Course Prescription

An advanced course on the process-form relationships that shape coastlines over a range of spatial and temporal scales. Coastal processes are examined with field experiments in which principles of experiment design and field deployment are demonstrated. Long-term evolutionary perspectives are examined using a range of field techniques. These short- and long-term approaches are then merged to address examples of applied coastal management problems. No formal prerequisite but an understanding equivalent to GEOG 351 will be assumed.

Course Overview

Coasts are among the most dynamic landforms on earth, constantly adjusting their form through a variety of process interactions. Coasts are also under ever-increasing human development pressures, and coastal risk is increasing as sea levels rise and storms change in intensity. This advanced course on coastal geomorphology provides the science basis needed to undertake research on coastal change problems, and underpin coastal management decision making. The course focuses on the process-form relationships that shape coastlines over a range of spatial and temporal scales. Short-term coastal processes are examined with field experiments in which principles of experiment design and field deployment are demonstrated. Medium- and long-term processes are examined in laboratory classes and lectures. Together these different approaches are merged to address examples of applied coastal management problems.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of of some of the major questions being addressed by coastal scientists (Capability 1 and 2)
  2. Develop and demonstrate an understanding of of coastal processes (Capability 1)
  3. Demonstrate and apply practical skills utilised in the analysis of coastal data obtained from field sampling (Capability 2 and 3)
  4. Develop an understanding of the skills and equipment required to design and undertake a competent piece of research in applied coastal geomorphology (Capability 3)
  5. Evaluate coastal management options drawing on theoretical knowledge and experimental data (Capability 1, 2, 3 and 4)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in. 

For this course, you can expect 40 hours of field work and associated lecture material, 40 hours of reading and thinking about the content and exam preparation, 40 hours of lab work, and 30 hours work associated with research report.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including labs to complete components of the course.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including labs and field trip will not be available as recordings.

Attendance on campus is required for the exam.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
