GEOG 772 : Advanced Raster Data Analysis


2020 Semester One (1203) (15 POINTS)

Course Prescription

Concepts and theories underpinning digital analysis of raster data, including remotely sensed data, LiDAR data and digital elevation models. Sources, nature and accuracy of raster data, analysis and integration of raster data from diverse sources, and applications of raster data analysis in hydrology and environmental modelling. No formal prerequisite but an understanding equivalent to GEOG 317 or GISCI 341 will be assumed.

Course Overview

Introduction to a wide range of raster data and how each type of data is typically analyzed to achieve a specific objective of application in solving real world problems. Students are expected to complete three assignments in the lab, through which they will develop practical skills in analyzing raster data using mainstream computer packages. Topics include analysis of imagery data (image reprojection, image enhancement, and classification),  raster thematic accuracy assessment, multiple temporal and multi-source data analysis and integration, and LiDAR data analysis. Research skills will also be developed through completion of an independent project.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Understand the major properties of various raster data so as to know how to best use them (Capability 1)
  2. Develop skills in digitally manipulating raster data using a mainstream package (Capability 3)
  3. Be able to communicate independently completed research results using the written language (Capability 4)
  4. Develop critical thinking abilities in knowing how to use proper raster data to solve real world problems (Capability 2)
  5. Demonstrate professional and academic integrity through completing tasks under the lecturer's guidance (Capability 5)
  6. Be able to undertake main types of raster data analysis independently

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, 2 hour tutorial, 3 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 3 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.
