GREEK 201 : Ancient Greek Literary Texts 2A

Course Prescription

Detailed study of prescribed texts with reference to their language and meaning, and critical appreciation of their literary, historical and/or philosophical qualities.

Course Overview

This course is being offered solely in online delivery mode in 2022, and thus learning materials will be comprised of a mixture of live synchronous meetings and asynchronous materials (including instructor recordings) to be engaged with and completed by the students in their own time. There will be two synchronous meetings a week during which selections from unadapted Greek text will be translated and text and related content, including secondary scholarship, will be discussed.  Students will be expected to have prepared a certain number of lines of the text in advance of each lecture and may be called on to translate or answer questions about the grammar or significance of individual sentences or passages.  Questions from students are welcome and encouraged.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Translate passages of a Classical Greek text into good English. (Capability 1.2)
  2. Comment critically on the significance of passages of text in ancient Greek. (Capability 2.3)
  3. Discuss important themes and problems in the texts read. (Capability 1.1, 2.2 and 4.1)
  4. Read, analyse, and evaluate secondary scholarship in relationship to a primary text. (Capability 1.1, 2.1, 2.2 and 4.2)
  5. Take responsibility for learning by making choices regarding assessment at established opportunities during the course. (Capability 5.2)
  6. Cultivate whakawhanaungatanga through live (synchronous) discussion opportunities and online engagement in order to create a vibrant and productive shared classroom. (Capability 6.3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend a minimum of 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.  Students who do well typically spend more time than the bare minimum studying.

Delivery Mode

Online

Attendance is expected at scheduled online activities to complete components of the course.
The course will include live online events including group discussions and lectures and these will be recorded.
Attendance on campus is not required for the exam.
Where possible, study material will be released progressively throughout the course.
This course runs to the University semester/quarter timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

This course is available for delivery to students studying remotely outside NZ in 2022.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Students who have not already done so should take Greek 200 alongside this course in order to be introduced formally to some of the grammatical constructions that will be found in the set text.
