HISTORY 317 : Nazi Germany and its Legacies

Course Prescription

An in-depth look into a period of history that has simultaneously fascinated and horrified generations of people around the world. Topics include: the origins of Nazism, Adolf Hitler and the rise of the NSDAP, life in Nazi Germany in peace and war, Hitler's foreign policy, the Second World War, the Holocaust and its myriad legacies in history and popular culture.

Course Overview

This course offers an in-depth look into the history and legacies of National Socialist Germany (1933 – 1945). Topics include: the origins of Nazism, Adolf Hitler and the rise of the NSDAP, life in Nazi Germany in peace and war, Nazi Germany’s foreign policy, the Second World War, the Holocaust and their myriad legacies in history, memory, politics and popular culture.

Classes consist of a mixture of lectures and discussion forums (either in-class or online). Students are expected to undertake weekly reading responses (and peer review each other's responses), write an academic essay on the historiography of some aspect of the 1933-1945 period, and offer a reflective response essay on the themes of the course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop and demonstrate an understanding of the history and historiography of Nazi Germany between 1933 and 1945 and its legacies in history, memory and popular culture (Capability 1.2, 2.3 and 4.1)
  2. Improve and develop information finding, critical reading and essay writing abilities. (Capability 1.1 and 1.2)
  3. Analyse and evaluate a range of historical sources and situate them within the context of their time (Capability 2.1 and 2.3)
  4. Recognise and interpret conflicting interpretations about the past (Capability 1.2)
  5. Undertake peer reviews of other students' assignments and critically evaluate their quality (Capability 2.1, 4.2 and 4.3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

This course is offered in two delivery modes:

Campus Experience

Attendance is encouraged at scheduled activities, including lectures and tutorial discussions.
Lectures and tutorial content will be made available as recordings. Other learning activities including online review tests will be available via CANVAS. The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

All assignments will be submitted online.

Online

Course content is delivered online. There are no live events.
Study material will be released progressively throughout the course, on a week-by-week basis. Students are expected to keep up with the weekly module content, which consists of a 2-hour pre-recorded lecture, a 1-hour pre-recorded tutorial discussion, and a weekly review test. Students can engage with their peers via an online discussion forum, moderated by the course coordinator.

This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

All readings for the course will be made available via CANVAS.
Students may need to do research in the University library's online or on-campus resources.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
