Course Prescription

An examination of key issues in the theory and practice of history, with a focus on the controversies and consequences of the so-called “poststructuralist (or linguistic) turn” of the 1980s, as well as more recent challenges. The aim is to provide a self-reflexive approach to historians' representations and interpretations of the past.

Course Overview

This course offers an intensive introduction to key issues in the theory and practice of history. It exposes you to different ways of conceiving the historical enterprise and prompts you to consider what sort of history you might practice.  HISTORY 737 focuses on the controversies and consequences of the so-called “poststructuralist (or linguistic) turn” of the 1980s, as well as more recent challenges presented by the digital revolution and populist questioning of academic authority. The aim is to illuminate how and why scholars over the past three decades have engaged in a “rethinking” of the historical enterprise and charted new directions in the practice of history.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify and describe recent debates over historical theory, method, and practice. (Capability 1, 2, 3 and 4)
  2. Explain and critically evaluate historians; arguments, methods, and theoretical approaches. (Capability 3, 4, 5 and 8)
  3. Develop reflexivity in the construction, representation, and interpretation of historical knowledge. (Capability 3, 6 and 8)
  4. Construct and express coherent arguments;in both oral and written forms—about the theory and practice of history. (Capability 6, 7 and 8)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 30 point course over two semesters, and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 30 point (over two semesters) course that they are enrolled in

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

This course is not available for delivery to students studying remotely outside NZ.

Attendance is required in seminars to complete the course.
Seminar discussions are not recorded.
The course will not include live online events unless emergency remote teaching and learning is instituted.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

I've added a week and final essay topic on environmental/climate history (theory and methods), due to students concerned about climate crisis and wanting to know how historians can be of use in the present emergency.

Academic Integrity
