Course Prescription

The application of general management principles to health organisations and resources, with particular reference to the nature of health organisations and health professional teams. Includes theory and concepts supporting the effective management of health human resources and financial resources.

Course Overview

This is a course aimed at applying general management principles, skills and techniques in the health sector. Particular attention is paid to managing in the context of professional organisations. Through out the course the material is applied within simulations, case studies and in-class debates. The course will help students critically evaluate how to be an effective health care manager, and address the various demands that come from working in a complex environment.

Along with a good critical understanding of the health management context being developed, the course addresses specific management domains of managing effective teams, financial planning, business planning, and performance management.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Critically evaluate what health management entails and why health organisations behave as they do (Capability 1.2 and 2.2)
  2. Develop and demonstrate an understanding of how organisations should function if they are to meet their goals and objectives, and why they do not always operate as people think they should (Capability 2.1, 2.2, 3.1 and 5.1)
  3. Apply theoretical concept of engagement, participation and performance to demonstrate how effective teams are built (Capability 1.1, 3.2 and 4.1)
  4. Explain how change can be managed in a healthcare setting (Capability 1.1, 2.1, 2.2 and 5.1)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 12 hours of lectures, 12 hours on on-line self paced modules hour tutorial,  50 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 75 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Campus Experience

This course is made up of both face to face workshops and online modules. The expectation is that the online module relevant to the module is completed prior to attending the workshop. Engagement in both the workshops and online modules is expected as both contribute to completing components of the course.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a block delivery.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

In-class workshops
Students commented they preferred the class was not split in half for the in-class workshops. They wanted to have the full range of views/experiences in the room together. For 2021 we have brought the class together for the in-class workshops.

Assignment prep
Students appreciated the dedicated zoom sessions for assignment discussion/preparation. This was a new initiative for 2020 and will continue for 2021

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
