Course Prescription

Offers the opportunity for academic staff to provide a specific course of study for one or several students. It is available only by arrangement between the staff member(s) and students.

Course Overview

The course give students some hands on experience in a research project. Supervisors will make a list of topics available to students shortly before the semester starts, along with the number of places available. Students may contact the supervisors if any of these topics are of interest. Topics may also be arranged through individual discussion between a student and staff member. The classes usually consist of weekly small group meetings. The assignments are written.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop, design and justify the rationale for a research project, including theoretical models and critical thinking to construct arguments in a review of previous research on the topic. (Capability 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1 and 3.2)
  2. Able to design the method to test a specific research question, providing reasoned arguments for the choice of sample, measures and procedures, taking into account ethical considerations. (Capability 1.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2 and 5.2)
  3. Be able to write a detailed report of a research project adhering to APA format and standardised reporting guidelines. (Capability 2.3, 4.1 and 5.1)
  4. Demonstrate and understand how to apply data analysis to a specific research project. (Capability 2.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 10 hours of work on research including regular meetings with the staff member.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Academic Integrity
