Course Prescription

Explores themes in the development, usage and regulation of new technologies. Examines a range of technologies such as blockchain technology, and other distributed ledger technologies with reference to compliance, including their implementation and impact in industry and on society. The legal issues arising from the use of smart contracts are investigated.

Course Overview

Blockchain technology is a general-purpose technology. The course provides a grounding in the varied forms of distributed ledger technology and their application in a range of industries and society as a whole. The legal issues, use and implementation of smart contracts are also explored. The course also explores the use of blockchain as a governance tool in both traditional organisations and decentralised autonomous organisations (DAOs).

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Understand and describe the effect of human behaviour on the development and adoption of general-purpose technologies including distributed ledger technology (Capability 1.1 and 4)
  2. Explain and critically evaluate an application of distributed ledger technology (Capability 3, 4 and 6.2)
  3. Critically analyse the potential impact of distributed ledger technology on society (Capability 3 and 5)
  4. Evaluate the potential and limitations of smart contracts (Capability 3 and 4)
  5. Explain the use of a distributed ledger technology through an infographic and reflect upon the process (Capability 3, 4 and 6.2)
  6. Understand and explain how distributed ledger technology can be harnessed as a governance tool (Capability 2, 3 and 8)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 1 hour of class discussion, 3 hours of reading/listening/watching and thinking about content and 6 hours of work on discussions, assessing your knowledge of the content through self-testing using quizzes, and working on the assignment and the creation of an infographic.

Delivery Mode

Online

Attendance is optional at scheduled online activities including class discussions.
The course include live online events including group discussions and these will be recorded.
Where possible, study material will be available at course commencement.
This course runs to the University quarter timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

The quiz assessment has been removed and a discussion assessment introduced. This is because students were too fixated on getting the right answer for the quizzes, rather than thinking and discussing the content.  (The quizzes have been retained, but they will be used for formative feedback only and not formative/summative feedback). The discussion assessment is also being used successfully in another course in this programme.

Academic Integrity

The University of Auckland will not tolerate cheating, or assisting others to cheat, and views cheating in coursework, tests and examinations as a serious academic offence. The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced.
