Course Prescription

An introduction to Korean society and culture, focusing on the development of the nation. The course covers the colonial legacy, national division, and cultural, social, economic and political changes in the two Koreas. No knowledge of Korean language required.

Course Overview

This course provides students (who have minimal or no prior knowledge of Korea) with key features and concepts in Korean society, history, culture, politics and economy. Taking a topical and comparative approach, we will cover the following topics and themes: (1) development of the modern Korean nation and its division into North and South; (2) religious and philosophical traditions and values that are the basis of modern Korean culture; (3) Korea’s relationship with its old and new neighbors, China, Japan (and Russia and the United States); (4) the economic, political and social changes in both South and North Korea in the last seven decades; (5) the building of North Korean state, its leadership, ideology, and culture; (6) challenges of globalisation and demographic changes of the two Koreas in the post-1990s; (7) Korean diaspora overseas and their relationship with their ethnic homeland; and (8) the inter-Korean relationship, unification efforts and future of the Korean Peninsula.

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of of essential concepts, interpretations and facts on Korean society and culture (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 3.2 and 4.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 24 hours of lectures, a 12 hour tutorial, 42 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 42 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including tutorials to received credit for components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including tutorials will not be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events including tutorials.
Attendance on campus is required for the exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Online

Attendance is required at scheduled online activities including tutorials to receive credit for components of the course.
The course will include live online events including tutorials/lectures and these will be recorded.
Attendance on campus is not required for the exam.
Where possible, study material will be available at course commencement throughout the course.
This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
