Course Prescription

Korean grammar at an advanced level. A continuation of KOREAN 201.

Course Overview

As a continuation of KOREAN 201, the course aims to help students expand communicative skills in modern Korean at an advanced intermediate level and develop deeper awareness of significant cultural values and practices in Korean-speaking communities. Building on the knowledge gained from students’ prior Korean studies, the course introduces more advanced linguistic structures and vocabulary with greater emphasis on writing practice. Students who successfully complete the course should be able to comprehend and produce intermediate-level texts independently and discuss a broad range of general topics relating to their daily lives as well as sociocultural issues.

Prerequisite: KOREAN 201 Restriction: May not be taken if a more advanced language acquisition course in this subject has previously been passed

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Be able to communicate in Korean in various situations using culturally appropriate language (Capability 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7)
  2. Be able to carry out a variety of language functions, such as describing experiences and events, giving opinions, and reporting information, while using proper communicative strategies (Capability 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7)
  3. Be able to comprehend intermediate-level Korean texts (Capability 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7)
  4. Be able to write a broad range of daily-life as well as sociocultural topics (e.g., cultural differences). (Capability 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week on each 15 point course that they are enrolled in, including class time and personal study and assignment preparation.

Students are expected to attend three lectures per week.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

This course is NOT available for students studying remotely, outside Auckland or offshore in 2024.

Attendance is required at scheduled class activities to receive credit for some components of the course.

Due to their interactive nature, classes will not be available as recordings.

Some course activities may be delivered on-line.

Attendance on campus is required for tests.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
