Course Prescription

An introduction to a range of approaches to second language teaching and the theories of language and learning which underpin them. Students will explore the basic concepts related to current approaches to ELT in current contexts of learning.

Course Overview

LANGTCHG 101 compares traditional and communicative approaches to language teaching, introduces basic teaching micro-skills and class management techniques and provides an overview of course planning processes. It also covers the use of teaching materials and technology, outlines how to teach grammar, listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary and pronunciation to speakers of other languages, and discusses the different roles of teachers and learners.       

You will be assessed with two major assignments and two tests. The two assignments will require you to demonstrate your understanding of theoretical concepts from the course as you complete practice-oriented tasks such as analysing a lesson segment or coursebook unit.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Become familiar with Communicative Language Teaching, including the Presentation, Practice and Production (PPP) and Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) models (Capability 3.1)
  2. Know how to approach the teaching of listening, reading, speaking and writing, along with pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar in a second language (Capability 3.1, 4.1, 5.3 and 6.2)
  3. Understand the requirements for second language course planning and design to meet the goals of diverse learners (Capability 1.2, 3.1, 4.2, 5.2 and 7.1)
  4. Design communicative activities and tasks for language learning (Capability 5.2)
  5. Work individually and in groups to put course content into practice (Capability 5.3, 6.2 and 7.1)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course. Students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, a 1 hour tutorial, 4 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 3 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Lectures and tutorials will be delivered as live sessions on campus. Attendance and participation is required in at least 75% of lectures and tutorials.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

The Language Teaching 101 coursebook is required and can be purchased from UBIQ bookshop on campus. 

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Feedback from students suggested they wanted more tutorials, so the number was increased to 8 tutorials. Changes were also made to coursebook context to clarify content and guidelines were clarified for one assessment in response to student feedback.  

Academic Integrity

The University of Auckland will not tolerate cheating, or assisting others to cheat, and views cheating in coursework as a serious academic offence. The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced. This requirement also applies to sources on the internet. A student's assessed work may be reviewed for potential plagiarism or other forms of academic misconduct, using computerised detection mechanisms.
