Course Prescription

Introduces the study of the language acquisition-rich classroom by considering how a second or foreign language is learned, and explores different aspects of language teaching from the perspective of language learning and factors responsible for individual differences in learning. Students will consider concepts and research in instructed language learning in relation to classroom, institutional, and broader social and political contexts.

Course Overview

 This course aims to develop an understanding of how languages are learned and how language learning theories can inform language instruction.    By the end of this course students will:        Have a general view of the factors that affect second language learning, both inside classrooms and in instructed contexts beyond the classroom such as study abroad      Be able to explain basic language learning theories and models      Be able to relate learning to social and ethical issues, such as learner identity      Be able to apply what they have learned to evaluate, analyse and critique instruction practices

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Understand basic theories and applications of instructed language learning in a variety of educational contexts. (Capability 1.1)
  2. Identify course content relevant to students' own experiences and contexts of learning and teaching. (Capability 2.1)
  3. Develop ideas and strategies for implementing language learning in current and future teaching contexts, based on theories and research encountered in the course. (Capability 3.1)
  4. Demonstrate critical understanding of course content in written assignments and tests. (Capability 4.1)
  5. Understand the significance of language learning in instructed contexts for equitable educational practices in one's own community and well beyond globally. (Capability 6.3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week on each 15 point course that they are enrolled in, including class time and personal study and assignment preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including lectures and tutorials to complete and receive credit for the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including tutorials will be available as recordings.
The course will include live online tutorials but only for students enrolled remotely.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
