Course Prescription

Explores the concepts of language learner identity and language teacher identity. The course reviews theory and research on identity and considers the practical applications of identity research and debates in classroom practice. Students conduct an independent self-reflective project.

Course Overview

In recent years identity has become central to understanding language teaching and learning. Scholarly discussion and research has shown that it is important for language learners to see themselves and to be seen as thinking, feeling learners who are part of communities both inside and outside of schools. How do they see themselves and how do others see them, in the contexts in which they learn? What issues of power arise from interactions in these settings? 

The same applies to teachers, and in addition, identity is vital to the way they practice and develop. Teacher and teacher educator identity is now a focus in all programs of teacher preparation and continuing professional development. This course explores recent research, grapples with the concept of identity and applies findings to everyday practice in classrooms, schools and beyond.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of early and recent research and debates in the area of identity in language education and applied linguistics (Capability 3)
  2. Critically evaluate ideas about the relevance of identity in language learning and teaching (Capability 4)
  3. Describe teaching and learning contexts with which you are familiar and how identity may apply to those contexts (Capability 1)
  4. Use concepts and research on identity to understand self and local contexts (Capability 6)
  5. Analyse research data and write about findings clearly and with insight (Capability 6)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, and the remainder of your time dedicated to this course on reading and thinking about the content and work on assignments.

This course is offered on campus.

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities to complete components of the course.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Online

Selected lectures and meetings will be conducted on Zoom - these will be announced well in advance. These lectures will be recorded, and the recordings will be made available on Canvas.

This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Selected lectures will be offered online throughout the semester, although the majority of classes will be held on campus.

Academic Integrity
