Course Prescription

The principles and processes of designing and evaluating language teaching materials.

Course Overview

Materials play a vital role in language teaching. The course examines various key issues, concepts and principles that underlie language teaching materials. The course is divided into three parts. In the first part, we examine some basic issues concerning the pros and cons of published materials and the criteria and principles for evaluating and selecting materials. The second part focuses on the criteria for adapting materials. The third part deals with the development of materials for teaching language systems and language skills and the role materials development play in professional development and reflective teaching. In this course we will work through the basic concepts and issues in a systematic way. By the end of the semester, I hope that you will be more confident in your understanding of what materials development and evaluation is all about. You should also have gained the ability to evaluate the potential value of particular language learning materials, as well as having some of the skills you need to develop good language learning materials of your own.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Understand and apply the current issues and debates in materials development and evaluation. (Capability 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3)
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of some of the key literature in the field. (Capability 1.1 and 6.2)
  3. Evaluate existing materials evaluation frameworks and their suitability for particular educational contexts. (Capability 2.1)
  4. Design a unit of language learning materials for a particular language teaching context and evaluate it. (Capability 1.2, 2.3, 4.2, 4.3 and 5.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

This course is offered in two delivery modes:

Campus Experience

 Attendance is expected at scheduled activities to complete components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities will not be available as recordings.
The course will include live online events.
Attendance on campus is required for some presentations by students.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
Online

Where possible, study material will be  released progressively throughout the course.
This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

This course is available for delivery to students studying remotely outside NZ in 2022.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
