Course Prescription

Explores advanced theoretical perspectives for research into second/foreign language learning, teaching, and use. Enables students to acquire an advanced understanding of selected research methods. Students work independently on a small-scale project, which involves the collection and analysis of data on second or foreign language learning, teaching or use.

Course Overview

 This course will familiarise students with different theoretical perspectives and research methods that have informed research into second/foreign language learning, teaching and use. It will enable students to acquire an understanding of selected research methods through an informed critique of published research.

This course will provide students with an understanding of criteria to consider when selecting a particular approach to research, the procedures involved in data collection and analysis, the approach to reporting findings and the contextual and ethical issues relating to research involving human participants. It will prepare students to undertake their own independent research project.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Understand different types of research in applied language studies (Capability 1.1)
  2. Identify and perform various aspects of the research process and research reporting (Capability 1.2)
  3. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of particular research studies (Capability 2.1)
  4. Apply knowledge by undertaking a small-scale independent research project (Capability 1.3)
  5. Demonstrate ethical understanding and practice in conducting research oriented assignments (Capability 5.1)
  6. Communicate effectively findings of research and critical reading in an online environment (Capability 4.1)
  7. Use knowledge gained in the course, especially that related to teacher research and teaching, ethically and effectively withing school and other educational contexts (Capability 6.3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week on each 15 point course that they are enrolled in, including class time and personal study and assignment preparation.

Other Information

In 2020, this course is offered entirely online through Canvas. A few face-to-face meetings will be scheduled to discuss assignments. These will be announced well in advance.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
