Course Prescription

Detailed study of prescribed texts with reference to their language and meaning, and critical appreciation of their literary, historical and/or philosophical qualities.

Course Overview

In 2022 this course focuses on the theme of "Gendered Voices". We will read and examine a selection of Latin literature that demonstrates a keen interest in male and female voices, along with masculinity and femininity, and other related topics. We will read both male and female authors, from the Classical and post-Classical eras, and compare how male and female authors thought about and expressed concepts that were important to them.

At stage III, we will focus on developing your skills in: close reading of Latin, critical analysis of scholarship and scholarly trends, expressing relevant concepts in Latin, identifying and explaining literary devices, and communicating your higher order thinking in oral and written form.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Analyse complex language and the problems involved in transferring meaning from one language to another. (Capability 1.2, 4.2 and 6.2)
  2. Create coherent versions in English of the meanings found in ancient writing. (Capability 1.2, 4.2 and 6.1)
  3. Understand complex language and complex thought from another culture and time. (Capability 1.2, 2.3 and 4.1)

Workload Expectations

This course is a 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, each week you will receive approximately 1 hour of recorded content to listen to and interact with, and you will be expected to attend 2x 1 hour live zoom sessions. The live sessions will be recorded, so if you cannot attend you will be expected to listen to them promptly each week in order to keep up. You can expect to complete another 7 hours of work per week on reading preparation, completing online interactions with your peers, and preparing assignments.

The course will include live online classes, and these will be recorded.

Participation in prescribed online activities is required to complete some assessment tasks. This participation will occur asynchronously, outside of the live online classes.

Where possible, study material will be available at course commencement.

This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

This course is available for delivery to students studying remotely outside NZ in 2022.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

There are no books for you to buy for this course. All set readings will be available online through the Learning Management System, Canvas.
