MAORI 103 : Introduction to Spoken Māori

Course Prescription

An introduction to spoken Māori for those with no previous knowledge of the language. Concentrates on the acquisition of aural and oral skills, developing the ability to understand and speak Māori. It is recommended that students also enrol in MĀORI 101.

Course Overview

An introduction to spoken Māori for those with very little, to no previous knowledge of the language. This course concentrates on the acquisition of aural and oral skills, developing the ability to understand and speak basic Māori. It is recommended that students also enrol in MĀORI 101.

Restriction: Māori 106. May not be taken if a more advanced language acquisition course in this subject has previously been passed

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of Māori constructions, given verbally/ orally and/or in written form, and further produce a grammatically correct response. (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and 4.1)
  2. Communicate an impromptu response in Māori to a given situation. (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 4.1, 4.2 and 5.1)
  3. Develop and demonstrate the ability to verbally give a Māori mihimihi, which incorporates knowledge acquired around whakapapa, pepeha and whānau. (Capability 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, a I hour tutorial.
