Course Prescription

An introduction to te reo Māori for University of Auckland staff members with little or no previous knowledge of the language. This course concentrates on the acquisition of written, aural, and oral skills, with a particular focus on te reo Māori for professional contexts, developing the ability to understand and speak Māori, with confidence and competence.

Course Overview

Māori 131 is seeks to develop of both spoken and written proficiency in te reo Māori, with a specific focus on professional contexts. It is delivered in a hybrid format with a combination of both online and face to face sessions. Broadly speaking, participants can expect to cover the following throughout the semester.

- Fundamentals of accurate pronunciation
- Greetings (Hellos, goodbyes, written starters and sign offs)
- Mihi (self introductions)
- Conversational basics

This is a 100% coursework course, made up of a combination of online, written and oral assessments.

Restriction: MĀORI 103, 106. May not be taken if a more advanced language acquisition course in this subject has previously been passed. Available to University of Auckland staff only.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of accurate pronunciation of te reo Maaori. (Capability 3 and 6)
  2. Prepare and deliver a basic introduction in te reo Maori (Capability 6, 7 and 8)
  3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a repertoire of common Māori words and phrases, with a specific focus on language for professional contexts (Capability 1, 3, 6, 7 and 8)
  4. Demonstrate the ability to greet and farewell appropriately in te reo Māori (both written and verbally) with due deference to both context and tikanga Māori. (Capability 1, 3, 4, 6 and 7)
  5. Engage in basic conversation in te reo Maaori (Capability 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures every week. There re also 2 full day workshops (9am-3pm) per semester. You will also be expected to spend up to 7 hours per week reading and thinking about the content and working on assignments.

Campus Experience

Weekly courses are taught online, while the full day wānanga are intended to be delivered in person.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
