Continuing the development of language skills that will facilitate students' own communicative ability.

Course Overview

Ko te whāinga o tēnei ara reo Māori, ko te whanake i ngā ture whakatakatoranga o te reo Māori mai i ngā tuhinga me ngā kōrero Māori kia pai ai te puta mai o te kōrero.

This course continues to focus on the development of language skills that will facilitate the communicative abilities of students. Te taha kōrero (spoken skills), te taha pānui (reading skills), te taha whakarongo (aural skills) me te taha tuhi (written skills) in te reo Māori will be further explored.

Prerequisite: MĀORI 103 or 131 Restriction: MĀORI 206. May not be taken if a more advanced language acquisition course in this subject has previously been passed

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate the ability to listen with understanding (whakarongo), read (pānui), write (tuhituhi), and speak (kōrero) in te reo Māori at an Intermediate level. (Capability 1, 3, 4, 6 and 7)
  2. Demonstrate and apply conversational skills (kōrero ā-waha) within a variety of contexts (ōpaki – informal, ōkawa – formal) in te reo Māori at an Intermediate level. (Capability 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8)
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of various language features, structures and vocabulary in te reo Māori at an Intermediate level. (Capability 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8)
  4. Be able to greet, acknowledge, and interact with others appropriately with due deference to both context and tikanga Māori. (Capability 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8)

Workload Expectations

The expectation is that students will spend a minimum of 10-15 hours per week on this course outside of class time as well as factoring in time to complete coursework. Students should manage their academic workload and other commitments accordingly. Deadlines for coursework are set by course convenors and will be advertised in course material. You should submit your work on time. In extreme circumstances, such as illness, you may seek an extension but you may be required to provide supporting information before the assignment is due. Late assignments without a pre-approved extension may be penalised by loss of marks – check course information for details.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

This course will primarily be delivered in person, on campus. There is a total of 4 hours contact time scheduled per week, split across 2 x 2-hour sessions.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Improvements to the course based on student feedback include a further list of helpful rauemi (resources) for Intermediate learners with links to relevant websites, aps, papakupu (online Māori dictionaries) and other digital resources to facilitate language acquisition.

Academic Integrity
