Course Prescription

Provides foundation skills in mathematics and develops mathematical competence. Topics covered include measurement, notation, functions, equations, exponential growth/decay, logarithms and statistics. Examples used in the course will revolve around applications of mathematics in the health sciences.

This course will provide you with the foundation in mathematics that is required for the study of physics, chemistry, biology and population health in the Certificate in Health Sciences programme.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  3. Apply trigonometric functions to a range of contexts (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
  4. Describe and predict linear and exponential growth and decay (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
  5. Apply statistical measures of central tendency, probability, and variance to data sets (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6)
  6. Apply knowledge of conversion algorithms in metric measurement (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
  7. Understand the utility of mathematics in a health context (Capability 2, 4 and 6)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 12 point course and students are expected to spend 8 hours per week involved in each 12 point course that they are enrolled in.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including tutorials.
Course content will be available online. Other learning activities including tutorials and workshops will not be available online.
The course will include live online events including drop-in sessions.
Attendance on campus is required for tests and the exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

MAORIHTH 29H is part of the Certificate in Health Sciences programme. All courses must be passed in order to complete this programme.

Academic Integrity

In such situations, students should complete the CertHSc Special Consideration form as soon as possible, no later than seven days after the affected test or exam date. This form will be available on CANVAS.
