# MATHS 333 : Analysis in Higher Dimensions

### Course Prescription

By selecting the important properties of distance many different mathematical contexts are studied simultaneously in the framework of metric and normed spaces. Examines carefully the ways in which the derivative generalises to higher dimensional situations. These concepts lead to precise studies of continuity, fixed points and the solution of differential equations. A recommended course for all students planning to advance in pure mathematics.

### Course Overview

This course is intended for students who have enjoyed the introduction to real analysis. An essential course for every student intending to advance in mathematics. It develops the foundational mathematics underlying calculus, it introduces a rigorous approach to continuous mathematics and fosters an understanding of the special thinking and arguments involved in this area.

Prerequisite: MATHS 332 or a B or higher in MATHS 254

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Display a high level of knowledge of mathematical concepts. (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
2. Demonstrate an understanding of potential applications and connections with other disciplines. (Capability 2)
3. Demonstrate an understanding a range of methods used in pure mathematics. (Capability 1, 2 and 3)
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of precision and proof in mathematics, and be able to present valid arguments in verbal and written form. (Capability 1, 2, 3 and 4)

The total grade for this course is determined by the higher of either 50% Exam, 20% Test, and 30% Assignments or 100% Exam.
A minimum of 35% in the exam is required to pass the course.
The use of calculators in the test and exam is not permitted.

This course is a standard 15-point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15-point course that they are enrolled in. For this course, you can expect a total of 36 hours of lectures, 12 hours of tutorials, 40 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 62 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

• Attendance is expected at scheduled activities.
• Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities will not be available as recordings.
• The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

The course will follow the content of the MATHS 333 Coursebook.

During the course Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the staff responsible for the course and staff-student consultative committees.

Feedback in 2022 did not indicate a need for changes.  The structure of the course will remain the same in 2023.
