MATHS 399 : Capstone: Mathematics

Course Prescription

An exploration of the role of mathematics in society and culture, and the activities performed by mathematicians as teachers, critics, and innovators. Students will develop their skills in communication, critical thinking, teaching, and creative problem solving.

Course Overview

This is the Capstone course of the Mathematics Department, and it concerns the role of mathematics in modern society and the nature of the discipline as a human activity. The course topics will pertain to a variety of issues, including didactics, cognition, history, and philosophy. In a highly interactive and collaborative environment, we are going to discuss the subject in a critical manner based upon contemporary research, activities, and a range of experiences that the course students bring to the classroom. Students' engagement, contribution and collaboration are the key to the success of the course. The course is relevant to everyone who is planning to use mathematics in the workplace or continue to graduate students in a mathematics-related discipline.

Prerequisite: MATHS 250 and 30 points at Stage III in Mathematics

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop a multi-faceted understanding of the place of mathematics in society (Capability 1 and 2)
  2. Critically engage with each other's ideas and experiences (Capability 2, 3 and 4)
  3. Contextualize their new knowledge in a broader disciplinary discourse (Capability 1 and 2)
  4. Analyse professional situations through the offered theoretical lens (Capability 2 and 3)
  5. Generate their own opinions on the subject building on the works of others (Capability 5)

Students need to obtain at least 35% in the Final Assignment to pass this course.

Students' preparation to and active participation in the lessons are expected.

Workload Expectations

Students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in. The number of hours spent on reading and thinking about the content, and working on assignments may vary from one student to another. Each weekly course session will last for up to 3 academic hours.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
